El Bordo de las Lanzas - General Güemes
Salta

El Bordo de las Lanzas, a 400-year old estancia shadowed by the Andes,
is an excellent option for discovering northern Argentina, a fascinating
and colorful land full of history and traditions.

El Bordo de las Lanzas, located at 37 miles to the east of Salta city and at 2,500 feet above sea level, is one of the country’s most historic estancias. Its colonial roots date from 1609, when Salta’s patriot, General Martín de Güemes led his Gaucho cavalry to victories over the Spaniards during the War of Independence, and still remains in his descendant’s hands.
El Bordo de las Lanzas building presents a pure Spanish colonial style, mainly built of adobe brick and hardwoods from the property’s own forests, thus, being one of the best examples of colonial rural architecture in all Salta. It holds an outstanding and lordly collection of colonial furniture, revealing a part of history in every corner. Cozy rooms decorated with religious paintings and furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, hand-carved images made by Jesuit missionaries, archaeological artifacts that have been found in the property, a valuable library with century-old books and documents, attractive porches and a courtyard surrounded by verandas are ideal for relaxing and enjoying the lovely landscape.
Its owners, the Arias family, direct descendants of the patrician families that have lived in this property for centuries, are excellent hosts.

The food features local and natural delights: “empanadas”, “carbonada”, “asado” and exotic home-made jams made with products produced in the farm.
Argentine-Peruvian Paso horses are also bred in the farm and you can go for a ride through the woodland and along the natural reserve of “yacarés” (South American cayman).
Thanks to its excellent location, you can take day excursions from El Bordo de las Lanzas to the colorful Humahuaca Gorge –declared a World Heritage Site–, the salt lakes and Puna desert, or visit the unique wineries and colonial churches of the Calchaquies valleys.
