Day 02: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA.

Half-day tour of Toconao & Salar de Atacama

Pick up at the hotel and drive south to Toconao, a small village where locals make a living by carving stone sculptures out of the abundant white volcanic stone. Even the houses, the church and the bell tower in this picturesque village are built with bricks of white volcanic stone. The next destination is the largest salt lake in Chile: the Salar de Atacama, a former inland sea created millions of years ago. Take in the stunning beauty of this vast salt-crusted plain set in the middle of the driest desert on earth. The Salar de Atacama is also home to various species of flamingoes and numerous other bird species. Afternoon return to hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 03: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA.

Full-day El Tatio Geysers & Machuca Village

Pick up at the hotel around 5:00 a.m. to travel north from San Pedro to the famous El Tatio Geysers, a geothermal field flanked by soaring peaks. After a 2-hour drive, arrive in El Tatio, set an elevation of 4.320 m/14.173 ft above sea level on the Altiplano, the Highland. Powerful spurts of steam shoot out from various holes. There are about 40 geysers, thermal wells and fumaroles. Watch the steam shoot up from the geysers in the early morning light. Pause for a delicious breakfast by the geysers and then set out on a walk around the geothermal field for a close-up look at this natural wonder. Depending on the level of geyser activity, it may possible to enjoy a soak in the hot thermal pools. Then continue to the village of Machuca town, a tiny indigenous settlement with traditional houses. Return to the hotel in San Pedro around 1 p.m.
