History and architectural features

The argentine bourgeoisie high society of the early 1900’s, accustomed to the refinements of the life in Europe, developed the eclecticism, turning away from the traditional Spanish colonial architectural style, with spectacular fronts and small inside patios and an esthetically admirable Art Nouveaux decoration.

The construction of the building today known as Mansion Dandi Royal began in those days. The Obras Sanitarias blueprints are dated 1913, when the water system was still in British hands. The manufacturing date stamped on the door locks and handles is 1889, from which we can assume that the idea to build the Mansion greatly preceded its actual construction.

Originally built by engineer Bianchi, based on the design by architect Cristophersen, the Mansion is organized around two inside patios with two floors facing the front and four facing the back. The first floor occupied by the Dandi Royal salon, up the marble stairwell,  the reception opens and the remaining three hold the bedrooms and amenities such as swimming pool, solarium, hair salon, mini-spa and more.

1903-2003 a journey through time one hundred years back

A theme residence unique in its artistic presentation of the Tango ambience, built to the eclectic architectural style and filled with art nouveaux pieces, where all public spaces and its 30 rooms are decorated with murals portraying tango scenes and original objets d’art .

An “academia del Tango”, a Tango dance school, where accomplished and well known argentine Tango dancers will introduce you to the fine art of Tango.

A “salon de Tango”, a typical Tango ballroom, where you can dance on an original  1925 wooden floor with all the feeling of the golden times of Tango.

And above all a unique experience in the magic and seduction of Tango, a journey through time one hundred years back, to the days when the Tango was danced in every corner of San Telmo.

Presentation

Mansion Dandi Royal is located in the San Telmo neighborhood, in downtown Buenos Aires, on one its main streets Piedras 922/936. San Telmo is Tango´s birthplace. Artists and bohemians can still be found among its cobble stoned streets and eclectic architecture. Mansion Dandi Royal is close to the main interest spots in Buenos Aires. Reference: 1 block = 100 meters. 10 blocks from the historical Plaza de Mayo, the Cathedral, the Casa Rosada and the Cabildo, 9 blocks from the main pedestrian thoroughfare of the city: Florida St., 10 blocks from Corrientes Ave. where the most important theatre plays come to scene (the argentine Brodway), 8 blocks from Avenida de Mayo, where Argentina’s most traditional coffee house is located: Café Tortoni and the Academia Nacional del Tango, 5 blocks from the world’s widest avenue (18 lanes), the 9 de Julio Ave., where the Obelisk and the Colon Theatre are located, only a few minutes away from the colorful La Boca and the famous Caminito way filled of handmade articles and artists, and due to its proximity to avenues and city access you will have many public transportation options at your disposal.

The facade stands out for its architectural iconicity, where the God Bacchus of exacerbated Italianizing ornamentation dominates the scene, crowned by a half point arch framed by two florid vases, which reestablish its formal balance.

In the year 2000 Dandi Tango Academy began negotiations to acquire this beautiful residence in order to fulfill our director’s, Héctor Villalba, dream of creating something never seen in lodging and Tango teaching for foreign and argentine Tango lovers.

That is how Mansion Dandi Royal – Tango Residential Academy was born, the very first of its kind, where you can live 24 hours a day in a warm, comfortable, sophisticated and original argentine Tango atmosphere.
