Salta
(4 days - 3 nights)
Day 01 - SALTA.
Reception at the airport and transfer to Selected Deluxe Hotel.
Remainder of the day at leisure. Overnight accommodation.
Day 02 - SALTA.
Breakfast. Full-Day Train of the Clouds: Departure from Salta at
7 am to its final destination, the Viaduct of "La Polvorilla"
(about 135 miles), crossing numerous bridges and tunnels, using
switchbacks, spirals and loops. It is a monumental engineering masterpiece
finished in 1948 and fully equipped. Along the way, we will see
small villages. "La Polvorilla" is a deep gorge where
a viaduct had to be built to cross the abyss at 233ft high. At this
point, the train reaches an altitude of 13,976ft a.s.l. From this
place the train starts its way back to Salta, stopping at "San
Antonio de los Cobres", an old copper and silver mining settlement,
along the river of the same name. The icy peaks of Mt. Acay can
be seen from the village.
Day 03 - SALTA.
Breakfast. Full-Day Humahuaca Gorge. Departure from the Hotel at
7 am. The route enters the "Quebrada de Humahuaca", a
deep fissure in the Altiplano (High Plateau), produced by the eroding
action of the River Grande. The route passes by several small villages
until it reaches Purmamarca, a picturesque town which seems stuck
in ancient times, and its striking "Seven Colors Hill".
We finally arrive in Humahuaca, unique for its pure colonial style
with its abode houses and narrow cobblestone streets. Return to
Jujuy through the same route, stopping at the Pucará de Tilcara,
old pre-Colombian aborigine stronghold partially rebuilt. On our
way back to Salta we will pay a short visit to San Salvador de Jujuy.
Overnight accommodation at the Hotel.
Day 04 - SALTA.
